Rubens at 257 by ZedderZulu Rubens at 257 by ZedderZulu
A rushed job, but I felt compelled to do a little something as tribute to Rubens Barrichello, who today officially became the most experienced driver in F1 history (i.e. the driver with most starts to his name)

I've always been a fan of Barrichello, a genuine,(ly) nice guy and a great driver. It is quite scary though considering that I got into F1 just as he was starting - which goes to show how long I've been following it now...

Took the liberty of including Riccardo Patrese, whose record has just been passed. ^^

Again, the cars a very rough around the edges (and all over in general, I hate drawing logos), I could have spent much, much more time (which I don't have) on them, and I do hope the portrait bares...some resemblance to Rubens, but anyway, this is my little tribute to one of my favourite drivers. Hope you likes :)

Several photos used as reference.

Now back to what I'm supposed to be doing...

Me too! He deserves driving a good fast car, and you can respect him for his experience and his passion for racing!

It was a pleasure watching him last race - shame he didn't finish a little higher, but it was still good :)

Yep, absolutely agree, he was fast, but it wasn't a lucky day for him.

I love your car paintings. In this particular piece I enjoy how the background blends right into the design of the cars.

Happy coincidence with the Benetton being green and yellow ^^
Sometimes though it was an excuse because I didn't feel confident enough to draw/reference pic didng't include all of the car =P

Barrichello - w00t! :w00t: Awesomely done there. I like how dynamic the cars look, and how the bright colours contrast with Ruben's monochromatic portrait.

I'm awaiting the rest of your F1 series. ;)

Next one may well be Giancarlo Fisichella. I think he's up for 200 at Monaco. :)

Yay for Rubens - too bad that he did not get any points though. Oh well... :)

Oh, THAT Rubens.

I think the face is very good, it has good expression. Perhaps you should experiment with a dark, thin hard brush for the eyelids and the opening of the mouth. What I find difficult myself when painting faces is avoiding a plastic-like, untextured appereance. I've tried adding noise, but that isn't really the solution either.
The cars are good, expecially the one on the back - minor critique there could be that the tire's edge is too sharp, but I haven't got a reference right here. On the whole they feel photographic. :-)

:pointr: Oh, THAT Rubens.

Well to be honest he's the only "Rubens" I have ever heard of...except his dad =P

I spent ages on his eyes and still agree that the lines should be darker and finer, but at the moment I'm tempted to leave it as is. :hmm:
Trying to give texture to a face is a pain as well, not sure what I can do with that though somtimes I use special texture brushes and go the face very lightly. Sometimes it works, other times it looks horrible...
The car at the back - you mean the white one (*cough*the Stewart Grand Prix one*cough* =P )? That tyre is the only bit of the pic that involves vector - because otherwise the tyre would look even worse, trust me :(
But I think I understand entirely what you mean in that respect.
Anyway, cheers very much! :D

You're welcome!

>Well to be honest he's the only "Rubens" I have ever heard of...except his dad <

Now you're making our Belgian friends very sad. :) He's sort of the Rembrandt of Belgium. Prolific output of abundant female flesh and extatic saints (no connection between the two).
Actually he's not really a favourite of mine as they're so terribly nice people...

All the things I suggested are close to or inside the If It Ain't Broke Don't Fix It zone... Interesting idea to use vectors. :)

Ah, I see your point.

The only thing that I can draw even more badly than straight lines are circles... :hmm:

Anyway, cheers again :D

I blissfully ignore straight lines, hoping that people ascribe the wobbles to atmospheric circumstances. :D

But yeah, straight lines you can fake - circles though...urgh X(

Don't forget, they should rarely be perfect circles anyway. Mathematically and according to the laws of perspective, even a frontally viewed circle should be something like and ellipse if it's not in the dead centre. :devilish: Few people know that.

In short, don't let them intimidate you. :D

Ah, the only problem is either it's that or I end up drawing what look like horribly punctured tyres :hmm:
